Championing Independent Veterinary Practice

Since 2019, we've been building the community, resources, and movement that help practice owners and managers thrive.

Our Story

In 2019, Naren Arulrajah was running Ekwa Marketing, a agency working with veterinary practices across the country. He noticed a pattern: practice owners had incredible clinical expertise, but many struggled with the business side. They knew how to diagnose and treat animals brilliantly, but pricing strategies, team management, marketing, and financial planning remained mysteries.

The problem wasn't lack of intelligence or effort. It was that there was nowhere to learn the "business of veterinary medicine." Veterinary school teaches clinical skills. Post-grad education deepens clinical knowledge. But who teaches practice owners how to build sustainable, profitable, fulfilling businesses?

Naren decided to change that. He started the Veterinary Business Podcast in his spare time, interviewing successful practice owners and industry experts. The early episodes were rough, unpolished, and full of technical hiccups. But they resonated. Practice owners were hungry for this conversation.

From those early podcast episodes, something bigger emerged: a community. Listeners reached out. They wanted to connect with other owners facing similar challenges. They wanted resources, templates, and tools. They wanted mentorship. They wanted to be part of something larger than their individual practice.

That community need became the Veterinary Business Institute. What started as a podcast is now a thriving platform where 15,000+ practice owners, managers, and veterinary professionals connect, learn, and grow together. We've delivered over $3M in partner savings. We've hosted hundreds of events and workshops. We've shared the wisdom of hundreds of successful practice owners.

And we're just getting started.

Meet the Founder

Naren Arulrajah

Naren Arulrajah

Founder & CEO, Veterinary Business Institute

Naren has spent the last 15+ years helping veterinary practices succeed. As founder and CEO of Ekwa Marketing, he's worked with hundreds of practice owners on growth strategy, marketing, operations, and business development. That experience taught him a critical lesson: practice owners are often brilliant clinicians but left to figure out the business side largely on their own.

The Veterinary Business Podcast started as a side project—Naren's way of documenting and sharing the strategies of successful practice owners he'd worked with. It grew organically as listeners recognized the value of peer-to-peer learning and expert guidance. That podcast became the foundation for the Veterinary Business Institute.

Today, Naren leads VBI with a simple vision: to be the trusted resource every practice owner turns to when building, scaling, or protecting their business. He still host the podcast every Tuesday, reads member feedback, and actively participates in the community he helped create.

What Drives Naren

"I believe independent veterinary practice is the future. Corporate consolidation will continue, but the owners and managers who are intentional about their business—who learn, connect, and grow with their peers—will thrive. VBI exists to help that happen."

Powered by Ekwa Marketing

VBI is founded by Naren Arulrajah, CEO of Ekwa Marketing, a full-service marketing and business consulting agency serving veterinary practices nationwide.

While Ekwa Marketing provides specialized agency services (strategic planning, marketing campaigns, digital strategy), VBI is a community platform designed to serve practice owners directly—regardless of which marketing partner they work with.

Think of it this way: Ekwa is for practices looking for hands-on agency partnership and execution. VBI is for practice owners who want to learn, connect with peers, and access tools and resources on their own timeline.

Many of VBI's insights, resources, and partner recommendations come from the work Ekwa does with practices every day. The community benefits from real-world experience and proven strategies. And VBI members often discover they want deeper support with Ekwa. But VBI membership is completely independent and works great on its own.
